KFSYSCC Commits to Becoming a Sustainable Hospital

In recognition of the pristine natural environment in Guandu and aligned with its mission as a cancer specialty hospital, Dr. Andrew T. Huang, CEO/President of Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center (KFSYSCC), signed the "Sustainable Hospital Development Initiative" with Chairman Chien You-hsin of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) today (July 5th). Together, they are committed to reducing environmental carcinogens, promoting evidence-based cancer treatment guidelines, increasing cancer patient survival rates, and supporting green energy and sustainable social actions as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Dr. Huang emphasized that since its founding 35 years ago, the hospital's mission has remained consistent: to reduce cancer incidence in Taiwan and to increase cancer patient survival rates. With a patient-centered approach, KFSYSCC is dedicated to providing comprehensive, continuous, and holistic cancer care. Recently, the hospital has also focused on cancer prevention, including the five major cancer screenings, health promotion programs for the Guandu community, and the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI).

The hospital highly values Chairman Chien You-hsin's promotion of international corporate sustainability and social enterprise development at TAISE. Jointly, they advocate for the sustainable development of cancer treatment. KFSYSCC commits to its founding mission as a non-profit social enterprise, utilizing Taiwan's medical resources to reduce cancer incidence and provide the most accurate and effective treatments to patients, aiming to become the benchmark hospital for the highest cancer survival rates in Taiwan.

Additionally, the hospital pledges to follow TAISE's environmental sustainability strategies, including actions to address climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate impact, disclose electricity and carbon emissions, reduce air pollution, and invest in green energy resources. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and 100% renewable energy use.

Chairman Chien You-hsin acknowledged that the practical sustainable actions taken by KFSYSCC since its establishment have earned recognition from Taiwanese society and cancer patients, making it the leading cancer center in Taiwan. The hospital's active promotion of health services in the local Guandu community and its partnership with Taitung Christian Hospital to establish a cancer treatment building in Taitung have significantly improved cancer treatment resources in the Hualien-Taitung area, reducing cancer mortality rates in Taitung. This demonstrates the hospital's significant impact in the medical field. This August, KFSYSCC will also participate in TAISE's 2024 Asia-Pacific Sustainability Expo, supporting the national net-zero transformation policy and fulfilling its responsibility as a global citizen committed to net-zero emissions.

Today's signing ceremony for the Sustainable Hospital Development Initiative was witnessed by key members of the Guandu Alliance, including Wei Xingjuan, Executive Director of the Asus Foundation, Yao Renlu, Co-Chair of the Tzu Chi Cultural and Educational Foundation, Lin Tianlai, Brand Director of the Tzu Chi Cultural and Educational Foundation, Cai Qing'er, Office Manager of the Tzu Chi Cultural and Educational Foundation, TAISE Secretary-General Chen Yongren, and Taipei Blood Center Director Lin Minchang.

  • The safest hospital in the country: Emphasizing infection control, the hospital has the lowest rate of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections and the shortest average hospital stay.

  • Development of precise cancer treatment plans and active engagement in the latest evidence-based cancer medicine: The hospital maintains a comprehensive tumor specimen database and participates in clinical trials to provide patients with the latest cancer treatments.

  • Establishing multidisciplinary cancer treatment teams: The hospital has 13 multidisciplinary teams that regularly discuss new cancer cases, treatment combinations, and care plans.

  • The highest five-year survival rate for cancer patients in the country: For 30 consecutive years, the hospital's five-year survival rate has been about 20% higher than the national average, with a 76% survival rate in 2022 compared to the national average of 55%.

  • Comprehensive support for cancer patients: The hospital provides a complete cancer care plan, including family meetings, support groups, psychological and spiritual care, home care, chemotherapy education, family caregiver education, long-term follow-up plans, palliative care, and social support resource referrals.

  • Practicing value-based healthcare: The hospital advocates for using the least medical resources to achieve the highest treatment outcomes, following the strategies of Michael Porter.
