Walking the Path of Cancer Treatment Together with Patients
In this era of abundant online information, where people often chase after renowned doctors, I, as a newcomer to the Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center, frequently ponder what unique value I can bring to patients. Modern medicine emphasizes evidence-based practice and strict adherence to treatment guidelines. The distinction I aim to offer is not in the outcomes but in providing a warmer, more supportive environment compared to the cold settings of large hospitals.
Every Patient Has Different Needs
A patient once told me that while waiting in the clinic, she felt every patient walking in was awaiting a verdict from the doctor. Some receive good news, while others receive bad news, feeling as though they have plunged into an abyss. My goal is to make them feel supported and guided securely through this journey. This heavy responsibility cannot be borne alone. Fortunately, at our hospital, we have many like-minded colleagues: outpatient and ward nurses, cancer case managers, operating room nurses, and a multidisciplinary team of physicians. Each patient has different needs, and we strive to provide personalized and holistic care, recognizing and addressing these unique aspects.
The Weight of Life: A Commitment to Patients
We treat not just diseases but patients. This often-repeated phrase bears repeating. As a surgeon, I believe it is crucial to see beyond the lesion and to hold the patient’s life with care and respect. Understanding the weight of life helps us earn the trust of patients, allowing them to place their lives in our hands. We humbly and diligently provide the best care, constantly updating our skills and knowledge to align with the latest international standards. This commitment to excellence not only heals others but also ourselves. This is the KFSYSCC value I believe in, and it is my promise to patients.
