A 30-Year Legacy of Excellence
Dive into the heart of Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center's (KFSYSCC) journey and discover why we stand tall amongst the world's premier cancer care institutions.
From its humble inception in 1990 to celebrating its 30th anniversary, KFSYSCC has evolved into Taiwan's first specialty teaching hospital, singularly focused on cancer care. Over these years, we have consistently risen to meet challenges, resulting in a staggering 5-year survival rate for cancer patients at a noteworthy 74%. This is a testament to our steadfast commitment, surpassing the U.S. average and beating Taiwan's national average by a considerable margin.
But numbers alone do not define us. Our success lies in our unwavering patient-centered approach. By fusing a multidisciplinary team-based care model with cutting-edge techniques, we have cultivated an environment of trust, ensuring that every patient receives optimal care, tailored to their unique needs.
As we step into the future, our vision broadens. With prevention at its core, we're determined to drive down the incidence of cancer. With a specialized team focusing on health maintenance and cancer prevention, we're looking to replicate our treatment success in the domain of prevention.
Our founder, Dr. Andrew T. Huang, encapsulates our ethos best, "I hope that in Taiwan's healthcare work and medical education, there will be a group of compassionate individuals who care for patients and possess professional qualities, serving the people and providing the best healthcare that we can achieve."

Between the years 2013 and 2017, we treated a total of 12,535 cancer patients spanning various stages and types of invasive cancer. Invasive cancers are cancers that start in one spot but then grow and spread to nearby areas. Remarkably, our data indicates a five-year survival rate of 72% for patients with invasive cancers. This achievement stands as a testament to our dedicated medical team, cutting-edge treatments, and holistic patient care approach. If you or a colleague is considering cancer treatment options, KFSYSCC offers evidence-based care with proven outcomes.
Of the top ten cancers in Taiwan, KFSYSCC boasts higher 5-year survival rates compared to other institutions, underscoring our commitment to superior patient care. A 5-year survival rate refers to the percentage of patients who live at least five years after their cancer is diagnosed; a higher rate indicates better treatment outcomes. In this chart, the red bars clearly show that our hospital excels in treatments for various cancers.
For all stages of all cancers combined, KFSYSCC boasts a survival rate of 74%, while for invasive cancers, it's at 72%. In comparison, the national average for invasive cancers in Taiwan is at 52%. This data indicates that patients at KFSYSCC have a significantly higher chance of survival post-five years of their diagnosis than the national average. The table also reveals that for specific cancers like Thyroid and Breast, KFSYSCC has a survival rate of 98% and 93% respectively, which is again higher than the national average. Such statistics underline the excellence and efficacy of the treatments provided at KFSYSCC.
The figure on the left offers a focused view on the 5-Year Observed Survival Rates for the next set of top 10 cancers from 2013-2017. This comparison is drawn between the outcomes at KFSYSCC and the national average in Taiwan. The specific cancers highlighted in this part include oral, colorectal, stomach, lung, and liver.
From the data, it's evident that KFSYSCC consistently outperforms the national average in terms of survival rates. For instance, the 5-year survival rate for patients with oral cancer at KFSYSCC stands at a robust 76%, both for all stages and invasive types, whereas the national average for invasive oral cancer is 53%. Similarly, for colorectal cancer, KFSYSCC reports a survival rate of 68% for all stages and 67% for invasive types. This is in contrast to the national average which is slightly lower at 57% for invasive colorectal cancers. The statistics consistently favor KFSYSCC across all listed cancers, further cementing its reputation for delivering superior patient outcomes.
In the figure, two distinct markers represent 5-year survival rates: the red dot symbolizes the success rate for patients treated at KFSYSCC, while the grey dot represents the national average for Taiwan. A straightforward glance reveals the profound difference: the red dot consistently lies to the right of the grey one. KFSYSCC consistently outperforms the national average in terms of 5-year survival rates across all listed cancers.
For instance:
Thyroid cancer patients at KFSYSCC have a 5-year survival rate of 98%, compared to Taiwan's average of 94%.
For breast cancer, our survival rate stands at 92%, markedly higher than Taiwan's 85%.
Nasopharyngeal cancer patients treated at KFSYSCC have a survival rate of 86%, significantly outstripping the national average of 69%.
This trend holds true across all cancers, from the more common ones like prostate and skin cancer to rarer and often more challenging types such as esophageal and pancreatic cancer.
KFSYSCC's steadfast commitment to excellence and our relentless pursuit of advanced treatments are reflected in these numbers. Patients who choose KFSYSCC are not just selecting a hospital; they are opting for a higher chance of survival and a partner who will stand with them in their battle against cancer.
